The historic capital of the Ile de Ré, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is today a village of incomparable charm. Organized around its harbor and protected by ramparts, it's a must-see resort for all visitors to the Ile de Ré.
Here, narrow streets and alleyways conceal many treasures of Ré's heritage: the half-timbered Maison de la Vinatière (16th century), the Renaissance Hôtel de Clerjotte and the citadel, where prisoners on their way to the penal colony passed through.
A lively city center with houses steeped in history, terraces for conversation and daydreaming, and a harbor where fishermen and yachtsmen mingle in good spirits.
